CONTEMPORARY DANCE
“When we are not in conflict with form, the boundary and the limit become the places from which we begin to be.”
from the book The Spacious Body
THE SHAPESHIFTING BODY

Proteiform adj. [from the name Proteus and -form]. – Capable of taking on different appearances or attitudes, like Proteus, the sea deity of Greek mythology who had the ability to assume any animal form or even the form of an element (fire, wind, or water).
The research emphasizes the transformative experience as a creative appropriation of limits. The practice unfolds by alternating exercises (repetitions, sequences, partnering, etc.) and improvisation, with particular attention to musicality, phrasing, and rhythm. The aim is to share tools and methods for discovering one’s own inner music, celebrating eclecticism, versatility, and multiplicity, and then sharing one’s melodies with the group.
This work, starting from notions of gravity, weight, spirals, and the distribution of muscular tone, seeks to explore bodily sound waves, accents, and qualities in order to reach intentions, emotions, and situations of collective composition.
More specifically, the structure alternates dynamic and energetic moments with periods of meditation and breathwork, moving through different collective imaginaries. Entering a flow of research, the intention is to arrive at a dialogue with one’s own feelings and emotions—experienced tensions—in attentive connection with the interaction between emotional stimuli, motor configurations, and variations in muscle tone.
The foundations for entering the creative process are an understanding of gravity, weight, the opposition of forces, the physiology and anatomy of the body in relation to space, and the regulation of tonic tension; from there, one can delve into music, rhythm, ritual, and the vibrant spectrum of collective dance.
